How to Open a CDS Account
What Is a CDS Account?
CDS stands for Central Depository Systems, a company owned by the Colombo Stock Exchange. Think of a CDS account like a bank account, but instead of holding your money, it holds your shares in electronic (digital) form.
When you buy shares, they get added to your CDS account. When you sell shares, they get removed from it. There is no paper share certificate anymore — everything is digital and tracked through this account.
Why Do You Need a CDS Account?
You cannot trade on the CSE without one. It is mandatory. Every single investor — whether you’re buying one share or a thousand — must have a CDS account before placing any trade.
Documents You Need to Open a CDS Account
Before you start, keep these ready:
- National Identity Card (NIC) copy
- A recent utility bill or bank statement (for proof of address)
- A passport-size photo
- Your bank account details (for receiving dividends and trade payments)
If you are a foreign national or a non-resident Sri Lankan, additional documents and an Inward Investment Account (IIA) are required — your stockbroker or bank will guide you through this separately.
Open Online Through the CSE Mobile App
If you prefer a fully digital process without visiting a broker’s office, you can also open a CDS account using the CSE Mobile App. This app allows remote KYC verification, meaning you can complete the entire process from your phone without physical paperwork. This option is especially useful for busy professionals and first-time investors who want a quicker setup.
Common Mistakes to Avoid
- Submitting incomplete documents — this delays your account approval.
- Using an inactive email address — you may miss your account confirmation.
- Not checking your broker’s fee structure — fees can vary between stockbrokers, so compare before choosing one.
- Assuming CDS account = trading account — your CDS account holds your shares, but you’ll still need to work with your stockbroker to actually place buy/sell orders.
